In terms of adding to the repertoire of methods there
was one interesting innovation tried by the ‘decision-making’ group.
This was a role-play, and the need to use it came about because there
was one man in the group who dominated the discussions and insisted that
women had an equal say in decision-making. Finally (and on the spur of
the moment) one of the participants said "For the next 5 minutes, I’ll
play the wife and you be my husband", and developed a situation
where the ‘wife’ had sold off a bag of grain to get herself a
nose-ring that she had been asking her husband for the last two years.
Within the space of 5 minutes, the situation
culminated in the ‘wife’ being beaten by the ‘husband’. The
action was spontaneous; one more person in the group almost joined in,
and the others who were watching agreed that such reactions were not
uncommon.
At the concluding session, a checklist was circulated
titled "Proven ways to keep women invisible on your project".
